Following its world premiere at the Cannes International Film Festival, CineAsia Oz has announced that South Korean thriller THE SPY GONE NORTH (공작) will be making its way to Australian cinemas on 23 August 2018. You can check out the local trailer below.
Director Yoon Jong-Bin has previously brought us The Unforgiven (2005), Nameless Gangster (2011) and Kundo (2014). This film is set in 1993, where Korea is the only country where the Cold War continues. Tensions surrounding the development of nuclear weapons escalate. Seok-young Park (Hwang Jung-Min), an army major in the South Korea military intelligence infiltrates the North Korean nuclear facility, disguised as a South Korean business man. While Seok-young gains the North Koreans’ trust, he quickly learns of secret deals between the two Koreas.
The 45th President of the United States recently tweeted: “There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea. Meeting with Kim Jong Un was an interesting and very positive experience. North Korea has great potential for the future!” So we guess that this film remains firmly in the land of fiction now. To quote 45’s subsequent tweet, “Sleep well tonight!” In the meantime, we’ll be watching old episodes of M*A*S*H as a training manual.
Australia gets to see the film only weeks after its South Korean debut on 8 August 2018 from CJ Entertainment.
