    X-Men: First Class

Like many of Marvel’s iconic superheroes, the X-Men were created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby in the 1960s, a time when the world sat under the threat of nuclear war and the United States were being torn apart by civil rights unrest.

Unlike some of its contemporaries, also born out of the nuclear age, the series has remained fresh and current through thousands of comic books, several animated series and four highly successful X-Men feature films. With the sour taste of the X-Men Origins: Wolverine film still in the mouth of fans, the only place they could put it to muffle their cries of anguish, the X-series is rebooted by Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn.

On the eve of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, recent doctoral recipient Charles Xavier (James McAvoy, Gnomeo & Juliet) is approached by CIA’s Dr. Moira McTaggert (Rose Byrne, Insidious) to help track down potentially super-powered mutants behind the growing threat. Charles is also a mutant, with telepathic abilities, and uses his powers to scour the country for other beings with unique abilities to help them fight the good fight. Joining him in this task is the troubled Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender, Inglourious Basterds), a Holocaust survivor with incredible powers over metal, intent on bringing his own brand of justice to Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon, Elephant White).

Matthew Vaughn has made no secret of the fact that he was displeased with the direction of X-Men: The Last Stand, the third film in the principle X-Men series, particularly after he withdrew from that film and was replaced by Brett Ratner. Later claiming that he “could have made something a hundred times better than the film that was eventually made”, fans tended to agree. Vaughn proved himself in the comic book world with his adaptation of Kick-Ass, a take-no-prisoners assault on the senses, and with that victory under his belt he has been able to return to the comic book world. While set in the 1960s, the film does not stick strictly to the canon of the time, or the historic X-Men lineup, nor does it take its story from the 2006-2007 “X-Men: First Class” comic mini-series of the same name. Instead, Vaughn and his team of screenwriters – who included Zack Stentz and Ashley Edward Miller, the boffins behind the big-screen adaptation of Thor – take the series in its own direction, neither wholly indebted to the comic nor the film series that increased its popularity in recent years. It is surprising, given this rather liberating set of circumstances that the writers have found themselves in, that the film opens with a virtual shot-for-shot remake of the concentration camp scene from the original X-Men.

    X-Men: First Class

Unlike the majority of recent superhero films, the X-Men have always been distinct as being ensemble pieces. While this is true of this latest installment – with the inclusion of some excellent supporting cast in Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), Rose Byrne, the sensual January Jones (Unknown) and the Man in the Black Suit Oliver Platt – it is McAvoy and Fassbender’s relationship that is the key to unlocking X-Men: First Class. The inevitable clash between the future Professor X and Magneto, played by Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen in the earlier films, hangs over all the events of the film, and McAvoy and Fassbender make worthy successors to the classically trained masters. While it is this same air of inevitability that inhibits some of the drama, and leads to a few “and that’s the origin of that” moments, it doesn’t inhibit some of the awesome set-piece action sequences that quite literally blow the previous films out of the water. Yet the film’s drastically reduced budget, with an estimated $100 million cut from the X-Men: The Last Stand budget (and $30 million less than Wolverine), shows in otherwise mundane scenes, such as the strangely failed makeup on Nicholas Hoult’s beast. If this were the first X-Men film, it may just be a modern masterpiece, but as a reboot, it will have to settle for being a great start in a new direction.

Vaughn creates his own vision of the X-Universe in a clever, well-paced action film. It doesn’t reach the dizzying heights of X-Men 2, but it adds an excellent cast and an impressive Bond-esque period setting for a promising reboot to the franchise.

X-Men: First Class is released in Australia on 2 June 2011 from Fox.

New ‘X-Men: First Class’ clips and Japanese TV spot

X-Men: First Class - Charles Poster (Australia)We are just over a week away from the release of one of the most highly anticipated blockbusters of the year and Fox has released two brand new clips from X-Men: First Class. Fair warning though: there be spoilers ahead.

X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time.

First up is a clip called ‘Magic Trick’, in which Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Dr. Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne) make an impassioned plea to US government officials, before Raven Darkholme (Jennifer Lawrence) aka Mystique makes a rather convincing demonstration of Xavier’s point.

The second of these clips, dubbed ‘Meeting Hank’, shows the first encounter between Hank McCoy (Nicholas Hoult) aka Beast and Charles Xavier and his growing band of X-Men. In this clip, Hank is ‘outed’ as a mutant. This is obviously before he goes all blue and furry.

Last, but not least, is a Japanese TV spot that very briefly shows the conflict between Erik and Charles. Something to look forward too indeed!

    X-Men: First Class - Erik

Hot on the heels of the three character trailers for Banshee, Havok and Beast released yesterday, Fox has unveiled the latest set of clips from the hotly anticipated comic-book prequel X-Men: First Class, this time for the shape-shifting Mystique.

This clip features the character of Mystique, played as the villain by Rebecca Romijn in the original X-Men films, is the shape-shifting temptress and future hench-person of the big bad Magneto (Michael Fassbender). The young version of the blue Mystique/Raven Darkholme is played by “it girl” Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), and the clips feature a budding relationship between her and Hank McCoy (aka Beast). We also get a glimpse of the mentor role that Magneto will eventually play in her life.

First Look: Banshee, Havoc and Beast character trailers for ‘X-Men: First Class’

X-Men: First Class is almost upon us, and Marvel and Fox have released three new character trailers for the forthcoming film: for Banshee, Havoc and Beast.

The trailers to date have given us the merest fumes of what Matthew Vaugh’s (Kick Ass) version of the X-Men will look like, and these clips (courtesy of MTV) give us our first extended look at scenes from the film.

The first of these features Caleb Landry Jones (TV’s Friday Night Lights) as Sean Cassidy (aka Banshee), the mutant with the power of a sonic scream.

The second trailer above is for Havoc, also known by his human name of Alex Summers (not to be confused with Scott Summers/Cyclops, portrayed in the first three X-Men films by James Marsden and brother to Alex in the Marvel comics). Played by Lucas Till (Battle: Los Angeles), his powers manifest as plasma beams that he has difficulty controlling. How difficult? See the clip above.

Last, but not least – Beast! Portrayed by Kelsey Grammer and lots of digital makeup in X:Men – The Last Stand, this is his origin story showing his painful transformation from geeky man of learning to big fuzzy blue know-it-all with a heart of gold.   This time out he is played by Nicholas Hoult, a seasoned veteran at just 21 years of age. Making his mark on the big screen in About a Boy (he was the boy), he has gone from boy to man in such manly films as The Weather Man, A Single Man and now X-Men.

New International ‘X-Men: First Class’ Trailer

X-Men: First Class - Sheet artwork - Australia

Another day, another new trailer. This brand new international trailer for the forthcoming X-Men: First Class, with stacks of new footage. This new trailer comes courtesy of 20th Century Fox and Bleeding Cool.

Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to prevent nuclear Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.”

Excited yet? The film will star James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne, January Jones, Kevin Bacon, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence, Caleb Landry Jones, Oliver Platt, Lucas Till, Edi Gathegi, Jason Flemyng, Morgan Lily, Zoe Kravitz and Bill Bilner.

We aren’t going to go through and tell you which scenes are new, and there is a simply joy in discovering that for yourself. All we can say for sure is that this retro origin-story approach seems to be finally giving director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass), who had been previously tapped to helm X-Men 3: The Last Stand before Brett Ratner took over, a chance to share his vision with the world.

Only a day after Joss Whedon announced the start of production on the forthcoming The Avengers, Marvel Studios has confirmed the start of production on the film. They have also released the first image from the film – although it doesn’t give away much at the moment.

Production has commenced today in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated movie “Marvel’s The Avengers,” directed by Joss Whedon (“Serenity”) from a screenplay by Whedon.  The film will continue principal photography in Cleveland, Ohio and New York City. Robert Downey, Jr. (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2”) returns as the iconic Tony Stark/Iron Man along with Chris Hemsworth (“Thor”) as Thor, Chris Evans (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) as Captain America, Jeremy Renner (“Thor,” “The Hurt Locker”) as Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo (“The Kids Are Alright”) as Hulk, Scarlett Johansson (“Iron Man 2”) as Black Widow, Clark Gregg (“Iron Man,” “Thor”) as Agent Phil Coulson, and Samuel L. Jackson (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2”) as Nick Fury.  Set for release in the US on May 4, 2012, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is the first feature to be fully owned, marketed and distributed by Disney, which acquired Marvel in 2009.

Continuing the epic big-screen adventures started in “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” and “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Marvel’s The Avengers” is the super hero team up of a lifetime. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster.

    The Avengers - First Image

So while the image doesn’t really give away anything that we didn’t know already — that is, the confirmation of four of the characters that will appear in the film, along with a lovely set of stairs and a S.H.I.E.L.D logo — it is good to see it finally all coming together.

The Avengers is due out on 4 May 2010 from Disney.

‘The Avengers’ film begins shooting, reveals Whedon

    Avengers Logo

With Thor only hitting Australian cinemas this week, and not in the US until early May, director Joss Whedon (Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Firefly) has revealed on Whedonesque that shooting on The Avengers begins today.

    Hi Pumpkins, joss here.

Tomorrow we start shooting (I THINK I’m legally permitted to say that). Day one. That’s right. We’ll be shooting the pivotal death/betrayal/product placement/setting up the sequel/coming out scene, at the following address:

[Marvel Lawyers rush in, take Joss’s keyboard, blowtorch a picture of his family like in “Stormy Monday”, drink his milkshake, leave the seat up, fluff his pillows, violently unfluff his pillows, leave]

Went too far. My bad. Anyhoo, it should be a fun day, followed by the eighty thousand other fun days it will take to finish this. I’ll be checking in from time to time, if there’s news or I crave attention (i.e. am awake) . None of it will be Avengers news — I have some very denty pillows to remind of that — but I may have tidbits. (They’re not about Firefly. I should say that up front, if only to protect Sis Mo from the HATORZ.)

Some of you may be saying, Joss! Why this link, here, now, why, huh, howcum? My friend Allyx turned me on to these guys, and I’ll tell you, they’ve gotten me through this intensely pressurized, preply time. I strongly recommend checking out their other vids — I’ve watched them many many times, and I have a very special place for “Teamwork” in my heart. These guys are the guys. And IS there a better movie title than “Eagles Are Turning People Into Horses”? I thought not.

So wish me luck. DO IT! LUCK! NOW! I’m off to finish some Buffy pages, and then figure out what the movie is about already. I’m pretty sure it’s about the Justice League [Marvel Lawyers re-enter, unspeakability occurs] or possibly something else. I’ll get it. I’ve been looking forward to this. For about 46 years.

    Catchphrase!

It was only last year at San Diego’s ComicCon that the entire cast was seen together for the first time, confirming Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man), Clark Gregg (Agent Coulsen), Scarlet Johannsen (Black Widow), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/The Hulk).

    The Avengers Assemble

For people not in the loop, The Avengers is the super-powered super-team consisting of all of the . With only Captain America: The First Avenger to go before The Avengers assemble in 2012, and Thor out in cinemas last week, this marks the coming together of the Marvel Universe on screen in a journey that began with Iron Man in 2008.

Those of us in a hemisphere lucky enough to have seen Thor already will have seen its product placement/setting up the sequel scene after the credits, and while we won’t be cruel and spoil it for you here, it does reveal much of The Avengers plot, or at least the main essence of the storyline. We’re told that if you know your Avengers history, it is going to be a doozy.

The Avengers will also mark the change of studio for the recent Marvel films, with the property now fully owned by Disney. As such, The Avengers is due out in cinemas on 5 May 2012 from Disney. Before then, we’ve got Captain America: The First Avenger to look forward to in June.
