  • Australia’s ‘Cargo’ gets new trailer and poster from Umbrella

Australia’s ‘Cargo’ gets new trailer and poster from Umbrella

Umbrella Entertainment has dropped a new trailer and poster for Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling’s superb film CARGO. While the rest of the world gets the film via Netflix on 18 May 2018, the festival success and rave reviews have led to the film garnering a theatrical release on 17 May 2018 around Australia.

Adapting their own Tropfest short of the same name, the feature film introduces us to Andy (Martin Freeman) and Kay (Susie Porter) and their daughter Rosie, surviving on a houseboat in the wake of a pandemic. When tragedy strikes, Andy has less than 48 hours to find a suitable caretaker for Rosie before he too succumbs to the virus.

We reviewed the film in October last year at the Adelaide Film Festival, throwing a 4-star review at it: “A terrific spin on the ‘zombie’ movie, weaving traditional Aboriginal narratives into an unforgiving landscape for an experience that’s truly unique.”

Umbrella’s Head of Theatrical Dov Kornits said “CARGO is one of the best and most commercial Australian films of the year. The reaction at the film’s World Premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival last year was overwhelming, and we saw first-hand how audiences respond to the emotional journey of this film.”

CARGO is also bound for the Tribeca Film Festival in New York at the end of the month.

  • Final ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ trailer unleashed today

Final ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ trailer unleashed today

We’ve all been preparing for AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR in our own way. Some of us have been binging on the MCU for months. Others have been busily building LEGO tributes. Marvel Studios have been making trailers, and this is the latest one of them.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is the culmination of 10 years of cinematic world-building. Starting with Iron Man back in 2008, a simple post-credits sequence starring Samuel L. Jackson has spawned a franchise model that few have attempted before, and many have tried to emulate since. By the time this epic is released, the MCU will account for 19 films worth of content, 5 short films, and about 17 seasons of television. Try binge-watching that.

With this latest trailer, we see the long-awaited arrival of Thanos (Josh Brolin), the force that ultimately brings members of the traditionally Earth-bound Avengers and the space-faring Guardians of the Galaxy together.

NB: This clip is a teaser trailer for the final trailer. It also celebrates 10 years of Marvel’s partnership with IMAX cinemas, hinting at the masses of new footage that await us in the forthcoming trailer. We will update this post when the final trailer is released.

  • Korean thriller ‘Seven Years of Night’ gets international trailer

Korean thriller ‘Seven Years of Night’ gets international trailer

CJ Entertainment has released the English-subtitled trailer for SEVEN YEARS OF NIGHT (7년의 밤), the latest mystery thriller from director Choo Chang-min (Masquerade). It hits South Korean cinemas on 28 March 2018. You can check it out below.

Based on the novel “7Nyeonui Bam” by Jung Yoo-Jung, it follows Seo-Won (Ko Gyung-Pyo), who’s drunken father Hyun-Soo (c) killed a young girl while driving seven year ago. The girl’s father Young-Je (Jang Dong-Gun) begins to plan his revenge. If there’s one thing that Korean cinema has taught us, then it’s not to cross a father looking for revenge.

The film began shooting back in November 2015 and finished shooting in May 2016. This partly explains Choo Chang-min’s 6 year absence from cinema screens since 2012’s Masquerade.

Given that CJ Entertainment has gone to the trouble of subtitling this, and were behind the recently international release of Golden Slumber and 1987: When the Day Comes, we should be expecting a local release date for this soon.

  • Laplace’s Witch: teaser trailer adds new song for Takashi Miike film

Laplace’s Witch: teaser trailer adds new song for Takashi Miike film

No sooner than our review for Takashi Miike’s 101st film went up, than a new teaser trailer for his 102nd went live. LAPLACE’S WITCH (ラプラスの魔女), based on the novel by Keigo Higashino, is being released in Japan on 4 May 2018. The new teaser, below, features a song (“Faded”) by Norwegian record producer and DJ Alan Walker.

Following the murder of two people suffocated by hydrogen sulfide at two different hot springs, the police bring geochemist Professor Shusuke Aoe (Sho Sakurai) onto the case. Soon he meets Madoka Uhara (Suzu Hirose), who guesses that a natural phenomenon will take place.

The film also stars Sota Fukushi and Lily Franky. There’s no word yet on if and when this will get a local release. However, we tend to expect these things to turn up at a festival somewhere.

  • ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ in teaser trailer for Disney sequel

‘Mary Poppins Returns’ in teaser trailer for Disney sequel

Disney released a teaser trailer for MARY POPPINS RETURNS, the sequel to the 1964 classic musical on Monday during the Oscars. It is due for release in Australia in January 2019.

Acting as a follow-up to the original as well as being a soft reboot, it stars Emily Blunt as the titular nanny. Set in 1930s London, it follows a grown-up Jane (Emily Mortimer) and Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw) who get a visit from Mary Poppins after Michael suffers a personal loss.

As we saw from the massive list of placeholder dates released by Disney last week, there’s at least 17 untitled live action films on their slate between now and 2023. One has to imagine that at least some of those will be remakes to existing live action properties, especially as their most popular animated fare is already slated for the remake treatment.

MARY POPPINS RETURNS also stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Pixie Davies, Joel Dawson, Nathanael Saleh, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, and Angela Lansbury. You can check out the teaser trailer and Australian poster below.

  • ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ gets new Super Bowl footage, has us grinning like Thanos

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ gets new Super Bowl footage, has us grinning like Thanos

The Super Bowl is going to give us a plethora of commercials for films that are months away. Here’s one we can hardly wait for. AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR gets a new 30-second spot and we’re already squeeing in delight.

It barely seems big enough to contain the scope of this franchise. The culmination of the film series that began in 2008 with Iron Man, here we see Spider-Man hanging out in the atmosphere, Thor hanging out with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and everyone else following Black Panther. How badass does Thanos look?

The other few hours of the film are due out in Australia on 25 April 2018, and on 4 May 2018 in the US, from Disney.

  • ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ teaser spot (re)introduces a legend

‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ teaser spot (re)introduces a legend

Beyond a few set shots and logos, we knew very little about SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY. That changed on Monday Australian time, as the Super Bowl unleashed a massive piece of footage from the forthcoming Han Solo origin story. Due out in on 25 May 2018 (24 May in Australia), the teaser trailer is certainly more tonally different than we’ve been led to believe.

The film stars Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo, with Donald Glover joining him as a young Lando Calrissian. In June this year, Howard took over directing duties from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who left (or were asked to leave) the production three quarters of the way through production.

The trailer shows Solo’s early attempts at starting a farming community in North Tatooine before he finds his true voice as a singer in the Mos Eisley band. Or was that some fan-fiction we were reading? You’ll have to watch the teaser below to find out.

A full trailer is expected tomorrow.

  • ‘Bad Genius’: Thai heist film hits Australian cinemas in November

‘Bad Genius’: Thai heist film hits Australian cinemas in November

CineAsia has set the local release date and trailer for BAD GENIUS, the Thai heist thriller from director Nattawut Poonpiriya (Countdown). It will drop in Australian and New Zealand cinemas on 2 November 2017.

Shot partially in Sydney, it follows Lynn (Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying), a genius high school student who makes money by cheating tests. In order to complete a new millions-Baht task, Lynn and her classmates have to finish the international STIC(SAT) exam in Australia and deliver the answers back to her friends in Thailand before the exam takes place once again in her home country.

Poonpiriya was reportedly inspired by stylistic forebears The ConversationThe Parallax ViewAll the President’s Men and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy to bring his caper to life, and the trailer embedded below is certainly reflective of the fast-pace of a heist film.

A box office success in its native Thailand, where is known as Chalard Games Goeng (ฉลาดเกมส์โกง), BAD GENIUS won the Best Feature award at the New York Asian Film Festival, and lead actress Chutimon received the festival’s Screen International Rising Star Asia award at the film’s screening.

  • Charming new trailer for ‘What If It Works?’

Charming new trailer for ‘What If It Works?’

Label Distribution has released a new trailer for their offbeat comedy-romance WHAT IF IT WORKS? ahead of its Australian theatrical release on 12 October 2017. Already a darling of the festival circuit, the rest of the country gets to see what we’ve been excited about.

Written and directed by Romi Trower, and starring Anna Samson, Luke Ford and Brooke Satchwell, WHAT IF IT WORKS? is the story of a tech genius with OCD and an artist with dissociative identity disorder who find a way of getting through life together.

In our review of the film, we found that it while “it does brush up against the notion that love can conquer mental illness, it also never shies away from the genuine hard work that people in similar relationships have to put in on a daily basis. A fun and engaging first feature from an Australian filmmaker, one that worms its way into your gooey insides the longer you spend with it.”

Earlier this year, it won the inaugural Best Australian Indie Film Award at the Gold Coast Film Festival.

  • ‘Better Watch Out’ gets Australian trailer

‘Better Watch Out’ gets Australian trailer

The Sydney-shot Christmas horror film BETTER WATCH OUT has a new trailer from Universal Pictures ahead of its 23 November 2017 release. You can check it out below.

This sadistic horror comedy begins on a quiet suburban street during the holiday season, a babysitter must defend a twelve-year-old boy from strangers breaking into the house, only to discover that this is far from a normal home invasion. Featuring a superb young cast including Olivia DeJonge and Ed Oxenbould, and Levi Miller who is on sensational form; as well as Patrick Warburton, Virginia Madsen and Dacre Montgomery.

Directed by Chris Peckover and written by Zack Kahn, when we saw this at the Sydney Film Festival in June we were thoroughly surprised by how much this throwback slasher has up its sleeve. When they say it’s Home Alone meets Funny Games, they aren’t kidding. Made with a whole lot of love for the genre, Levi Miller delivers an uncharacteristic turn that shatters his Jasper Jones/Red Dog: True Blue image.
