Wreck-It Ralph Retro Commercial and Monsters University Gets Viral

One thing you can count on with Disney is a great campaign for their films. Unless it’s John Carter, of course, in which case it is quietly abandoned. Two new examples for upcoming animated releases demonstrate this gift, with a retro commercial for the 8-bit retro charmer Wreck-It Ralph and full mock website for Pixar prequel Monsters University.

Like their viral videos for Lots-O’ Huggin Bear circa “1983”, this commercial advertises the original Fix-It Felix Jr game that “inspired” the film. Disney earlier put the game up online for people to play as well. These people understand what it is to be geek.

For Monsters University, a lot of effort has gone into this campaign. Indeed, somebody has gone to the trouble of looking at a lot of university and college websites to get this right. Faculty, sports pride, new, campus life, an extensive curriculum (including a dual major in English/Creative Roaring) and naturally a merchandise store. A few screencaps, including a campus map, can be found below.

The Dark Knight Rises Viral Campaign Continues

It’s less than a month until The Dark Knight Rises hits cinemas, and SuperHeroHype has revealed new elements from the film’s viral campaign via DewGothamCity and rykindata.com. The latter can be found by following a link in one of the newspaper ads below.

The bits and pieces of information in the newspaper provide vital clues to the plot of the upcoming film, and we reckon you should pay particular attention to the horoscopes below. The horoscopes for Pisces and Virgo seem to have the most information there, although Aquarius is just trying to get us to buy the new Mtn Dew. Our stars say we will receive an impressive financial windfall. Here’s hoping it all comes true.

Some are already predicting the ‘R’ in Rykin is a clue to a potential inclusion of Robin. Guess we’ll know in a month’s time.

  • Total Recall Viral Campaign Releases 8 New Posters

Total Recall Viral Campaign Releases 8 New Posters

IMPAwards have just added another eight posters from the Total Recall viral campaign, which have been appearing on billboards and bus shelters around the US.

The posters are by designers cold open, who did that terrific campaign for A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas last year. Most of them are about making your fantasies real, but the final one is PSA about the dangers of memory tampering. It’s just coolness in one-sheet form.

Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick.  Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories.  For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man.

Total Recall is released in Australia on 6 September 2012 from Sony.

  • Prometheus Viral Video Found in Credits

Prometheus Viral Video Found in Credits

MovieViral has found a clue in the credits of Prometheus. Leading to a website called www.whatis101112.com, a spinning copy of  Friedrich Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra can be found, along with the Wikipedia text below. After a moment, a video appears of Guy Pearce as Peter Weyland, similar to the TED Talk released in February.

Thus Spoke Zarathustra: A Book for All and None is a philosophical novel by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, composed in four parts between 1883 and 1885. Much of the work deals with ideas such as the “eternal recurrence of the same”, the parable on the “death of God”, and the “prophecy” of the Übermensch, which were first introduced in The Gay Science.

Given that we already had issues with Prometheus, is this an attempt to justify some of the loose narrative threads off-screen? Can we expect more movies to continue once they’ve left theatres. Judging from the date of the URL, the fictional start of Weyland Industries, we can expect more of this through to at least October, when we will presumably have something starting to resemble a Blu-ray forthcoming.

Umbrella Corporation LogoIt has been quiet, almost too quiet, on the Resident Evil: Retribution front for a while, but a viral video (embedded below) has been released via the Umbrella Corporation viral site.

After playing the promotional video for the fictional corporation, a familiar face “hacks” the site to warn us not to trust Umbrella.

Umbrella’s bio reads: Umbrella Corporation, one of the world’s leading biotechnology conglomerates, has unleashed a globe-spanning recruiting tour to find the world’s greatest minds to make advancements for the betterment of all mankind in the fields of biotechnology and genetic research. The tour kicks off in Cancun, Mexico in April 2012 and ends in Tokyo, Japan in September.

The Amazing Spider-man Gets New Photo, International Posters and Viral Video

Lots of new material from the next big superhero film, The Amazing Spider-man, has emerged from a whole lot of different sources.

First up, a new viral video has emerged from Oscorp, featuring Dr. Curt Conners (Rhys Ifans) giving a plug for the organisations intern program. In the film, Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) presumably joins said program. The video comes from faux Oscorp Industries site. There’s also three new Japanese international character posters from the film courtesy of Latino Review, and finally director Marc Webb has joined Twitter! To celebrate, he has posted a picture of Garfield perched on a lamp post with the message “Peter Parker. Good balance”.

Spider-man Wanted posterIt’s all about the viral right now, so make sure you have a box of tissues handy at all times. Continuing on from their worldwide video campaign, Sony Pictures have launched a new viral site for The Amazing Spider-man called WebbedMenace.com.

You can help by sharing your sighting!” At the moment, the site features a single 3:15 minute video (embedded below) of a faux news report, interviewing Captain Stacey (Denis Leary) and showcasing the people who left the Mark of Spider-man in the original viral videos.

  • New IMAX Trailer and Viral Video from Prometheus

New IMAX Trailer and Viral Video from Prometheus

Prometheus - International posterThe viral campaign for Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus has already given us one glimpse at the technology of the future with a TED Talk from Peter Weyland, and now we get a glimpse at a section bit of that technology thanks to Fox. With WonderCon on this week, we also get a first look at the IMAX trailer which contains new footage.

In the first video, we get a viral trailer advertising Weyland’s synthetic humans being indistinguishable from the real thing, and Michael Fassbender seems to have been one of these constructs. The second is the IMAX trailer and it is all about the action, Noomi Rapace and a few more spoilers.

Prometheus has played its cards pretty close to the chest so far, not revealing much about the film until the trailers began to emerge. Indeed, Scott long denied a connection to the Alien universe, but the evidence is mounting. The cat was well and truly out of the bag with the introduction of Weyland Industries, and shots of the Space Jockey and the U-shaped ship discovered in the first Alien universe. We hope that very little new is released between now and June, as this looks like it will be all about the surprises.

Prometheus opens in 3D on 8 June 2012 from Fox.
