With Cars 2 topping the box office in the US, Disney/Pixar have wasted no time in delivering a new teaser for next year’s Brave, their first non-sequel since 2009’s Up. In Brave, Scottish princess Merida (Kelly McDonald) defies her parents by persuing an interest in archery, but inadvertently jeopardizes her father’s kingdom in the process.
The new teaser, which played in the US in front of Cars 2 this weekend, only runs for just over a minute, and is much darker in tone than some of the other recent animated efforts on the market.
This comes hot on the heels of the teaser poster that was announced late last week.
Brave is due for release on 22 June 2012 in the US from Disney. No Australian release date has been set.
Captain America: The First Avenger may only be a month away from release, but that hasn’t stopped Marvel and Paramount from releasing a brand new trailer and poster in the last 24 hours.
The new trailer, courtesy of Paramount Australia, comes complete with more footage from the film, a pumping soundtrack from Tool and perhaps more importantly, more Tommy Lee Jones.
UPDATE (29/6/11): We have replaced the Yahoo! trailer with the official Australian release.
The new poster for Captain America: The First Avenger isn’t quite as fun as the recently released retro poster, in which the Cap is seen punching out Hitler, but it retains a certain handmade iconic charm that has been making its way into Marvel posters of late.
Captain America: The First Avenger will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America. As Captain America, Rogers joins forces with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) to wage war on the evil HYDRA organization, led by the villainous Red Skull (Hugo Weaving).
Captain America: The First Avenger will be released in Australia on 28 July 2011 by Paramount.
Last year’s Melbourne International Film Festival showed that it wasn’t against pitting a choc top and a bucket of popcorn against each other in a social media duel, and a series of trailers released yesterday show that even though they are turning 60 this year, self-parody is still a primary part of the MIFF ethos.
Taking a leaf out of the popular Downfall Internet meme of a few years ago, some of the genres that are typically associated with festivals are satirised in this set of trailers. There are both Chinese and Polish versions of these trailers, and a cameo from a fairly well-known Australian actor.
The Melbourne International Film Festival runs from 21 July to 7 August 2011 across Melbourne. The full program will be launched on July 7.
Following the success of the viral trailer campaign, which say faux trailers for Green with Envy, The Fuzzy Pack and the Green Lantern parody Being Greenjust a few days ago, we finally have the first full look at the forthcoming film version of The Muppets.
When Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, and friends Gary (Jason Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams) discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to raze the Muppet Theater, they help Kermit reunite the Muppets to stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theater.
The Muppets will be released on 5 January 2012 in Australia from Disney
This is a bit of shameless self-promotion on our part. Super 8 opened recently around the world, and clearly our review caught the eyes of some of the people at Paramount. A few of our eagle-eyed readers have spotted this TV spot on Australia’s network and cable television, and now thanks to Paramount Australia we can share the clip with all of you.
Some of our good friends are also mentioned in the video, including Damn Good Cup and Matt’s Movie Reviews, and it is great to see us sitting alongside the likes of Total Film and Ain’t It Cool News. Well done, local web critic community!
Thanks again to Anthony Britten and Jayne Piercy at Way to Blue for providing us with the clip.
With all of the hype surrounding superhero films X-Men: First Class and the US-released Green Lantern this week, Captain America: The First Avenger has managed to quietly slip a few new TV spots, with new footage no less, in under the radar.
Based on the long-running Marvel comic,Captain America: The First Avenger, the film tells the story of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), a runt of a soldier plucked from obscurity during the Second World War and made into an American super soldier by US government experiements. As the title implies, the film will also serve as a forerunner to the spin-off film, Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, tying the storylines of the recent Iron Man films, The Hulk and Thortogether as the ultimate super-team assembles.
Starring Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hayley Atwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Stanley Tucci and Hugo Weaving, these clips come to us from MarvelFreshmanTV in glorious HD. Both screened yesterday in the US.
Captain America: The First Avenger will be released in Australia on 28 July 2011 by Paramount.
Comic book fans rejoiced this week as Warner Bros. released a brand new trailer for the forthcoming superhero film, Green Lantern.
Previously trailers had caused some degree of fan ire, especially the CG costume and the apparent emphasis on comedy elements. At least they didn’t hire Jack Black for this one, right? However, the latest trailer – narrated by Australia’s Geoffrey Rush, who plays the alien Lantern Tomar-Re in the film – restores much of the faith that DC Comics fans have lost in recent years over the non-Batman films.
The trailer briefly describes the history of the Green Lantern Corps, the intergalactic space cops, and the momentous event of a human being inducted into the Corp. The dark and moody atmosphere it creates has shifted this up a notch or two in our books, and gives some light in the dark.
The Green Lantern Corps: A Primer
The Corps first appeared back in 1959, in DC Comic’s Showcase #22, the debut of the modern Green Lantern. The story goes that the Guardians of the Universe, some of the first intelligent life in the universe, tapped the willpower energy that fuels the Green Lantern power rings. With them, they divided the known universe into 3600 sectors with someone to patrol each of these sectors. These space cops formed the Green Lantern Corps. There are thousands of Lanterns, and in the world of the comics there have been at least four humans who have held the title over the years. Let’s meet some of the others.
Abin Sur: The immediate predecessor of Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) in Sector 2814 (Earth’s Sector), he crash lands on Earth and is close to dying. His rings seeks out the nearest eligible bearer of the ring, a man without fear. It chooses Hal Jordan, and the rest is history. He is voiced here by Temeru Morrison.
Kilowog: One of the Corps’ best trainers and recruiters, this big lug is voiced by Michael Clarke Duncan in the feature film of Green Lantern. The heart and soul of the Corps, he is known to be fiercely loyal and big softie, despite his gruff appearance. In the comics, Kilowog maintains the role of “drill sergeant” and is helping to rebuild the Corp after several crises that keep the Corps beleaguered of late.
Tomar-Re: Along with be the narrator to the above trailer, Tomar-Re is voiced by Geoffrey Rush in the film. His history goes all the way back to Green Lantern #6, Tomar-Re is one of the most senior members of the Corps and a member of the Honour Guard. As one of Abin Sur’s closest friends, he is the first to greet Hal Jordan to the planet OA.
Green Lantern is released 17 June 2011 in the US. Australian fans will have to wait though, as Green Lantern won’t be released locally until 11 August 2011 by Roadshow.
Here’s an odd little surprise. If we’re really honest, one of our most anticipated films of 2011 is The Muppets, starring all of our favourite Jim Henson creations along with Jason Segal and Amy Adams. We’ve now finally got a sneak peek of the film. Sort of.
Disney has released a trailer for a new film called Green With Envy, complete with its own poster. Ostensibly a romantic comedy, it is described on Apple Trailers with the following synopsis: Love struck meets star struck when a small town couple (Amy Adams, Jason Segel) head to Hollywood and discover their dreams of hitting the big time may cost them the one thing that matters most – each other.
There’s even a Green With EnvyFacebook group. This is actually the film-within-a-film from The Muppets, which will actually see the world’s biggest Muppets fan, Gary (Jason Segal, Gulliver’s Travels) teams up with Mary (Amy Adams, The Fighter) to help Kermit and the gang save their old studio from the machinations of greedy oil tycoon Tex Richman (Chris Cooper, The Tempest).
The film is also said to have appearances from, well, everybody! People listed so far are Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Zach Galifianakis, Selena Gomez, Neil Patrick Harris, Jack Black, Danny Trejo, Katy Perry, Mickey Rooney, Whoopi Goldberg, Dave Grohl, Alan Arkin, Liza Minnelli…it may be easier to check IMDB.
The Muppets will be released on 5 January 2012 in Australia from Disney.
We are just over a week away from the release of one of the most highly anticipated blockbusters of the year and Fox has released two brand new clips from X-Men: First Class. Fair warning though: there be spoilers ahead.
X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time.
First up is a clip called ‘Magic Trick’, in which Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Dr. Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne) make an impassioned plea to US government officials, before Raven Darkholme (Jennifer Lawrence) aka Mystique makes a rather convincing demonstration of Xavier’s point.

The second of these clips, dubbed ‘Meeting Hank’, shows the first encounter between Hank McCoy (Nicholas Hoult) aka Beast and Charles Xavier and his growing band of X-Men. In this clip, Hank is ‘outed’ as a mutant. This is obviously before he goes all blue and furry.

Last, but not least, is a Japanese TV spot that very briefly shows the conflict between Erik and Charles. Something to look forward too indeed!

X-Men: First Class is released in Australia on 2 June 2011 by Fox.
As anticipation for the J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Lost) and Steven Spielberg (do we really need to tell you what he’s done?) collaboration Super 8 grows, Paramount have seemingly begun to release the crucial “train sequence” in 30 minute segments. We’ve held off posting each of them here, but thanks to Paramount Australia we can now present all four clips together in one hit.
In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.
It’s been a bit unfairly labelled as “E.T. with lens flare”, following the Interweb’s bemusement over lens flare in space in Abrams last Star Trek film, but we think that the hand of Spielberg on this will ensure there is a decent Stand By Me meets Cloverfield vibe going for it. If that’s not on a poster by the end of the year, we’ll gladly eat our ham hats.
Super 8 is a Bad Robot/Amblin Entertainment production, directed by J.J. Abrams from his original script and produced by Steven Spielberg, Abrams and Bryan Burk.
The film stars Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney, Gabriel Basso, Noah Emmerich, Ron Eldard, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee and Zach Mills.
Super 8 will be released on 9 June 2011 in Australia from Paramount.
