The Week in Trailers: Goosebumps 2, Widows, Green Book, Last Sharknado, Beverly Luff Lynn

We try to cover as much as we can in details on The Reel Bits, but we are just one small site. A number of great trailers arrived on the scene this week that we just didn’t have time to give full posts to. Here’s a cool collection of them.

    Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween

The first film flew by our radar, but the first film clearly resonated with the generation of kids who grew up reading R.L. Stine’s books. Here’s a look at the sequel starring Wendi McLendon-Covey, Madison Iseman, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Caleel Harris, Chris Parnell, and Ken Jeong. It’s out in Australia from Sony Pictures Releasing on 25 October 2018, just in time for Halloween.

    Widows

From Academy Award®-winning director Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) and co-writer and bestselling author Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl), comes a modern-day thriller set against the backdrop of crime, passion and corruption based on the novel by Lynda La Plante. Four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands’ criminal activities. Has a staggeringly good cast that includes Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, Cynthia Erivo, Colin Farrell, Daniel Kaluuya, Jacki Weaver With Robert Duvall and Liam Neeson. It’s out in Australian cinemas on 29 November 2018 from 20th Century Fox.

    Green Book

This is what happens when Peter Farrelly (There’s Something About Mary) does something more serious. Starring Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, GREEN BOOK is the true story of a friendship that defied the odds. Set in 1962, the film follows Italian-American Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), who is hired to chauffer African-American pianist Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) on a concert tour through the Deep South. The film will have its World Premiere as a Gala Presentation at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. It is released in Australia on 24 January 2019 from eOne.

An Evening with Beverly Luff Lynn

“From the director of The Greasy Strangler” should be enough of a hook, but if you need more there’s plenty in this quirky trailer. Aubrey Plaza, Emile Hirsch, Jemaine Clement, Matt Berry, and Craig Robinson star in Jim Hosking’s film about…well, we’re still not entirely sure. Yet it got some praise when it screened at Sundance this year, and is due to hit US cinemas on 19 October 2018.

The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time

The final Sharknado. Dinosaurs. Sharks. Cowboys. Time travel. ‘Nuff said.

  • ‘Storm Boy’ adapts an Australian classic in new trailer

‘Storm Boy’ adapts an Australian classic in new trailer

Sony Pictures Releasing Australia has released the first trailer for STORM BOY, a contemporary retelling of Colin Thiele’s classic Australian tale. Directed by Shawn Sheet, it is released in Australian cinemas on 10 January 2019 from Sony.

‘Storm Boy’ has grown up to be Michael Kingley, a successful retired businessman and grandfather. When Kingley starts to see images from his past that he can’t explain, he is forced to remember his long-forgotten childhood, growing up on an isolated coastline with his father. He recounts to his grand-daughter the story of how, as a boy, he rescued and raised an extraordinary orphaned pelican, Mr Percival. Their remarkable adventures and very special bond has a profound effect on all their lives.

First announced back in May 2017, stars Geoffrey Rush and Jai Courtney will be joined by David Gulpilil, Trevor Jamieson, Morgana Davies and Finn Little as ‘Storm Boy’ in his first major role.

Produced by Ambience Entertainment’s Michael Boughen (Tomorrow, When the War Began, The Loved Ones, Killer Elite) and Matthew Street (Tomorrow, When the War Began, The Bank Job, W, The Messenger), the adaption is penned by Justin Monjo (The Secret Daughter, Spear).

  • DCEU: ‘Aquaman’ and ‘Shazam!’ trailers prove they exist

DCEU: ‘Aquaman’ and ‘Shazam!’ trailers prove they exist

Despite release windows in the next 5 to 9 months respectively, the Warner Bros. and the DC Extended Universe has kept any footage from AQUAMAN and SHAZAM! under wraps. Until now.

With Comic-Con International in San Diego running all weekend, we finally get our first look at the two new adventures for the DCEU.  In James Wan’s AQUAMAN, due out in cinemas in December, we see the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry as he takes the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be…a king.

The trailer relies very much on the appeal of a shirtless Jason Momoa, and that might just be the one factor that brings the world together in these troubled times. There’s definitely hints from Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis, and Joe Prado’s New 52 runs “The Trench” and “The Others” present in the trailer. The tone is wildly inconsistent, even for a trailer, but here’s hoping this is more than slow-mo action and underwater CG.

Then there’s the actual ray of light in the DCEU, with SHAZAM! set to be a proper comedy for the franchise. Even if it is a mildly mean-spirited body-swap caper. David F. Sandberg directs the film that the synopsis summarises as being about Billy Batson. “By shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them!”

  • CineAsia releases ‘iPartment’ in Australia/NZ in August, reveals teaser trailer

CineAsia releases ‘iPartment’ in Australia/NZ in August, reveals teaser trailer

CineAsia Australia has released the teaser trailer for iPARTMENT (爱情公寓), the feature-length version of the popular Chinese Mainland sitcom. It hits Australian and New Zealand cinemas from 16 August 2018.

Based on the popular Chinese series that first aired in August 2009, follows the romantic trials and tribulations of a group of 20-somethings living in an apartment building. The series was shot in a cinematic style, often employing CGI and other effects in its genre-blending. The film represents a 10th anniversary reunion of most of the cast.

The show has often been criticised for…er…”borrowing” plotlines and devices from US sitcoms like Friends and How I Met Your Mother. If by “borrowing” we mean taking them and using them wholesale. Series star Eric Wang, who is not returning for the film, recently labelled the show as “full of advertisements. It was all product placements.”

Directed by Frank Wei and written by series co-creator Yuan Wang, and starring Chen He, Lou Yi-xiao, and Sun Yi-zhou, you can check out the trailer below.

  • ‘The Merger’: Damian Callinan’s new Australian film gets a trailer

‘The Merger’: Damian Callinan’s new Australian film gets a trailer

It’s when one shit team joins up with another shit team to make a slightly less shit team.

Director Mark Grentell and producer Anne Robinson have joined forces with comedian/actor/writer Damian Callinan to adapt his stage show THE MERGER to the big screen. Umbrella Entertainment has now released a trailer, which you can check out below.

We first heard about THE MERGER back in May 2017 when the Screen Australia and Create NSW announced that they were providing production investment funding for the film. It combines two of Australia‘s most discussed topics: our response to the refugee crisis, and the footy.

The township of Bodgy Creek has seen better days: the population is dwindling, jobs are scarce and the litter has built up around the fading Tidy Town sign. The next victim of the town’s decline is the cash-strapped Aussie Rules footy club. Living a hermit-like existence on the town’s fringe, former football star Troy Carrington (Callinan) is coaxed into coaching after striking up an unlikely friendship with young Neil who is struggling with the recent loss of his father. Teaming up with Neil’s mum Angie (Kate Mulvany) who is running a nearby refugee support centre, they conspire to recruit refugees to ensure the team survives.

Shot on location in Wagga Wagga, and garnering official support from the AFL, it also stars John Howard, Nick Cody, Penny Cook, and a number of refugee voices both on camera and behind the scenes.

Callinan hopes that the film will serve as a message to all of Australia. “When you bother to listen and learn from what our refugees have actually been through, wanting to turn them away isn’t an option,” said Callinan.

Presented by Crow Crow Productions, Dream Genie Films, Definition Films, and distributed by Umbrella, no release date has been announced yet, but expect to see this later in the year.

CineAsia Oz tells ‘Herstory’ in July, adds new trailer

The fight for justice takes centre stage in HERSTORY (허스토리), a new Korean drama that is set for an Australian and New Zealand release on 26 July 2018 from CineAsia Oz.

Inspired by the ‘Gwanbu Trial’ of the early 1990s, it follows the struggles of 10 Korean ‘comfort women’ who attempted to attain visibility and  an admission of responsibility from the Japanese government. The film takes place over 6 years and 23 trials as the legal battles are met with aggression and empathy on all sides of the debate.

Directed by Min Kyu-Dong (The Treacherous, Horror Stories series), it stars Kim Hee-Ae (The Vanished), Kim Hae-Sook (Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds), Ye Soo-Jung (Train to Busan, Psychokinesis), Moon Sook (Keys To The Heart), and Lee Yong-Nyeo (The Handmaiden).

Set for release in South Korea in June 2018, it will make an interesting narrative accompaniment to the documentary Twenty-Two that was released late last year, following the 22 surviving Chinese women who were forced into sex slavery during the Japanese occupation of World War II.

  • First trailer for ‘The Hate U Give’

First trailer for ‘The Hate U Give’

20th Century Fox has dropped the powerful new trailer for THE HATE U GIVE, which debuted at the BET Awards on Sunday in the US. Based on Angie Thomas’ debut novel, this is one of the most anticipated films of the next few months. You can check out the trailer below.

Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighbourhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer.  Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right.

Thomas’s novel gave Starr a voice that is never didactic or inauthentic. It is merely a window into an event that may seem extraordinary to the outside, but reveals the everyday realities for millions. Like her character, Thomas uses her most powerful weapon (her voice) to respond to myths perpetuated by a seemingly immovable paradigm. The aim of a film on this scale is to take that message of everyday activism to the wider community.

Directed by film features Amandla Stenberg as Starr, with Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Issa Rae, KJ Apa, Algee Smith, Sabrina Carpenter, Common and Anthony Mackie. This is being released on 19 October 2018 in the US, but Australians will have to wait all the way until 17 January 2019 to see this.
