First Look: ‘Kokuriko-Zaka Kara’ Trailer from Studio Ghibli

Kokurikozaka kara film posterHot on the heels of The Borrower Arrietty, Studio Ghibli has just released the trailer for their next film, Kokuriko-Zaka Kara (From Up on Poppy Hill), directed by Gorō Miyazaki, the son of Hayao Miyazaki (Ponyo). Gorō Miyazaki was last seen on Tales from Earthsea.

Based on the serialised manga of the same name from 1980, it tells the story of young girl in 1963 Yokohama who is forced to grow up quickly when her father goes missing.

This will mark the second film in a row from the studio not directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, but the master will be co-writing Keiko Niwa, and music composed by Satoshi Takebe, marking another break from series regular Joe Hisaishi.

The trailer does not come with English subtitles, but it plays out more like a gentle music video. Aoi Teshima, who sang the theme song for the film Tales from Earthsea, sings the theme song for the film. Indeed, it seems to mark a return to the kind of contemporary seaside reminiscence we last saw from the studio in Ocean Waves.

Kokuriko-Zaka Kara will be released in Japan on 16 July 2011 from Toho. It does not currently have an Australian release date.

  • First Look: ‘Wu Xia’ Trailer

    First Look: ‘Wu Xia’ Trailer

Wu Xia/Swordsmen/Dragon posterPeter Ho-Sun Chan’s Wu Xia, also known as Dragon, is the next Chinese-language film to get a release in Australia. Although a low-res teaser has been floating around for a little while, thanks to WeDistributionHK we now get a look at the full trailer of the new Donnie Yen vehicle, still kicking after all these years.

Event Cinemas has the following official blurb: In the late Qing Dynasty, Liu (Donnie Yen, The Lost Bladesman) is a papermaker, leading a simple life with his wife Ayu (Tang Wei, Beginning of the Great Revival) and their two sons. Into their remote village comes Detective Xu (Takeshi Kaneshiro, Red Cliff), who is investigating the deaths of two bandits during a robbery. Xu quickly realizes that the incident in question was no ordinary botched robbery – and his dogged inquiry threatens to dredge up the dark secrets of Liu’s buried past, threatening not only Liu and his family, but the entire village.

This looks to be a slick and fast-paced actioner from Chan (Warlords, and producer of this year’s Mr. and Mrs. Incredible) and veteran Donnie Yen (Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen), who shows no signs of slowing down as he approaches 50, still churning out and average of three major pictures a year.

We are very keen to keep supporting Asian cinema in Australia here at The Reel Bits, as it frankly doesn’t get the promotion and the exposure that it deserves outside of the home entertainment market.

If you care about seeing Asian cinema in Australia on the big screen, we encourage you to go out and support the regular screenings at selected Event Cinemas and the regular Asian Cinema screenings at Hoyts Cinemas. Increasingly they are day-and-date with their Chinese release, so there are no excuses for that ‘other method’ of acquiring them.

Wu Xia is released in Australia on 7 July from China Lion.

First Look: ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ Trailer

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol posterIt was only a matter of time before superstar Tom Cruise got around to doing another Mission: Impossible film, having enjoyed a series of hits in Tropic Thunder and Valkyrie and a bit of a miss with Knight and Day. Now, only days after a version of the trailer was leaked online, Paramount has unveiled the official trailer for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol via Yahoo! Movies.

Directed by Brad Bird (Ratatouille, The Incredibles), Simon Pegg, Josh Holloway, Michael Nyqvist and Jeremy Renner star alongside Cruise. Details of the plot remain reasonably under wraps, as one would expect from anything that J.J. Abrams has anything to do with, but the trailer below gives us a hint.

UPDATE (11/7/2011): Thanks to Paramount Australia, we now have the Australian version of the teaser trailer available for your viewing pleasure.

First Look: ‘Footloose’ Trailer and International Poster

The wave of remakes, sequels and reboots, it was inevitable that Footloose would eventually get the remake treatment. The trailer has been playing across the web all weekend, and now thanks to Paramount Australia, we have the official local version – complete with exploding bus –  to share with our readers. We’ve also included the brand-new international poster for the new film.

Made for the modern audience, the cast rocking the Ray Bans, dancing to hip hop, kicking it in converse and those red boots have taken this film to a whole new place. Julianne Hough plays Ariel and Kenny Wormald, Ren is dubbed to be the next Kevin Bacon. Haven’t heard of many of the actors? That’s because this film represents many dancers come actors to replicate and enhance the classic that is Footloose.

Just for historical reasons, and for a bit of fun, here’s the trailer to the original Footloose, with decidedly fewer bus explosions. It’s a little bit more country to boot:

Paramount has also included the new international trailer, which differs significantly from the one we posted on out 2011 Release Guide late last week.

New ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ Trailer and Poster

Captain America: The First Avenger may only be a month away from release, but that hasn’t stopped Marvel and Paramount from releasing a brand new trailer and poster in the last 24 hours.

The new trailer, courtesy of Paramount Australia, comes complete with more footage from the film, a pumping soundtrack from Tool and perhaps more importantly, more Tommy Lee Jones.

UPDATE (29/6/11): We have replaced the Yahoo! trailer with the official Australian release.

Captain America: The First Avenger Trailer F by Paramount_Australia

The new poster for Captain America: The First Avenger isn’t quite as fun as the recently released retro poster, in which the Cap is seen punching out Hitler, but it retains a certain handmade iconic charm that has been making its way into Marvel posters of late.

Captain America: The First Avenger poster

Captain America: The First Avenger will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.  As Captain America, Rogers joins forces with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) to wage war on the evil HYDRA organization, led by the villainous Red Skull (Hugo Weaving).

  • Trailers: Melbourne International Film Festival 2011

Trailers: Melbourne International Film Festival 2011

MIFF 2011Last year’s Melbourne International Film Festival showed that it wasn’t against pitting a choc top and a bucket of popcorn against each other in a social media duel, and a series of trailers released yesterday show that even though they are turning 60 this year, self-parody is still a primary part of the MIFF ethos.

Taking a leaf out of the popular Downfall Internet meme of a few years ago, some of the genres that are typically associated with festivals are satirised in this set of trailers. There are both Chinese and Polish versions of these trailers, and a cameo from a fairly well-known Australian actor.

The Melbourne International Film Festival runs from 21 July to 7 August 2011 across Melbourne. The full program will be launched on July 7.

  • New International ‘Cowboys and Aliens’ Posters and TV Spot

New International ‘Cowboys and Aliens’ Posters and TV Spot

Cowboys and Aliens International One Sheet Group posterIt may have been science-fiction and the rise of the atom that saw the start of the decline of the Western in the 1950s, and the birth of the blockbuster that saw the end of the pulp sci-fi invasion films a few decades later, but Paramount’s blockbuster sci-fi-Western Cowboys and Aliens looks set to bring all three together in what Spike Awards has recently voted the ‘Most Manticipated’ Film of 2011.

Based on a 2006 graphic novel created by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg and written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley, and with art by Luciano Lima, the film is set to star Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig and Olivia Wilde as the folks in the old west who witness an alien spacecraft impacting the Earth. That’s right: it doesn’t get much better than Indiana Jones/Han Solo, James Bond and the ‘babe’ from TRON: Legacy going up against some aliens. Jon Favreau, director of Iron Man, is behind the camera on this one.

Paramount has sent over a clip from the recent Spike Awards, along with two brand-new international posters for the film.

First Look: Second teaser for ‘The Muppets’

The Fuzzy Pack poster (The Muppets)What happened? When three friends wake up wild-eyed, fuzzy-faced and lookin’ kinda green, then something terribly terribly wrong must’ve happened last night. But what was it? Where are they!? And is there any going back?
